Taylor Swift Stays Country Even Though She Won a Pop Award

taylor_swift_300x400

For all those Taylor Swift haters out there, you know who you are…you have emailed me numerous times….. Don’t get too excited about Taylor jumping to the dark side….I mean pop side.  Taylor insists that she is county.

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few days then you know that Taylor took home Favorite Pop/Rock Artist at the AMA’s Sunday night but this won’t change a thing.  Taylor tells CNN, “I think a country song is when you are singing about being proud of your life.  I sing about love and boys, and that’s my life. So that’s what fascinates me — feelings. And so I think if you’re singing and writing songs about the way that you live your life, that’s a country song.”

So here is my advice to all of you Taylor haters.  Quit hatin’ on the girl!  She has brought more attention to country music over the last year than anyone else in the genre.  Think of all of the people who were not country music fans before they saw or heard a Taylor Swift song.   Now they are being exposed to other country music because of her and she just may be giving one of the artists you love new fans along with her success.

Country Girl wants you to be a Tattle Tale! Have you been to a country concert lately? Run into a country artist while out on the town? We want to hear all about your country music news and entertainment.  Email me at countrygirl@countrymusictattletale.com

AMEN! Thank you for writing this. Everything you said is exactly what us Taylor Swift fans feel. Taylor’s haters will never out do her fans anyway. That’s why we keep winning her awards. :) The haters can keep on hating, but they will never bring her down.

  2. Kaila says:

Taylor is the reason why I’m a huge country music fan. I didn’t really listen to country until I started listening to her, and that’s ALL I listen to now. And I’ve been so some many concerts the past two years, that I wouldn’t have before. I’m so in love with country music, and I’m very happy that I found that out. So, I really agree with you on that. And congrats to Taylor on winning all those awards, she deserves them!

  3. Haley says:

Thank you SO much for writing this. No matter what Taylor has stayed true to her COUNTRY roots. She is a true country artist and country music will never be the same because of her!! I have seen her twice in concert she always loves her fans and make sure we know it, people love her and and I do too! I know only greater things will come for her! It has been great to watch her and be a fan since her 1st album and see where she is now. Taylor rocks.

  4. Sarah says:

I totally disagree with you. Taylor has brought attention to herself NOT to country music. She’s not “helping the cause” like people try to claim. Little teeny booper girls who are obsessed with her dont listen to country radio they listen to Taylor or pop stations. To the last person who said country music will never be the same because of her let me guess you never listened to country music before her. The same has been said about Garth, Kenny, Keith, Shania, Carrie, and many others. People say country music tells a story, so does a lot of other music, rap, hip hop, jazz, blues, they all tell stories. Story telling isnt unique to country and it doesnt make Taylor a country singer cause her songs tell stories. Taylor is a cross over artists she has no roots to stay true to. Her lasting power is limited, she’s only going to be able to write about high school for so long. I mean she is almost 20 after all why’s she still writting about being 15? She’s not my cup of tea, I dont hate her, she just does nothing for me, I cant relate to anything she does. I wouldnt create her with the success of anyone else, and I think most of them would be insulted by that.

  5. Amber says:

Sarah – THANK YOU!! My exact feelings.

  6. Kirsten says:

Sarah & Amber, you are completely clueless about music. Yes, Taylor has SOME songs that crossed over to Pop. Not all her singles did. And also, the girl is 19 years old, getting ready to turn 20. When her next album comes out, I’m sure it’ll be “more mature” for your taste. And there is a thing called COUNTRY POP. And don’t tell me there isn’t because I took a music theory class and learned all about it. Taylor is considered Country Pop. Well, so is Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, oh and even the great Dolly Parton has crossed over with some of her songs. Crossing over is NOT a bad thing. Country music has branches just like Rock and Pop do. You have Alternative Rock, Pop Rock, Hard Rock, Indie Rock, etc.. And then with Pop there is Pop, Pop Punk, Pop Rock, etc… Next time, trying being educated about what you are talking about.

  7. Country Girl says:

Just to clarify Sarah. I didn’t say or even lean towards saying that Taylor Swift is why country music or any other country music artist is successful. I just stated that because of Taylor Swift many young ears have now been exposed to country music. If Taylor Swift wasn’t so insistent on staying country those young ears would listen to something else. Believe it or not some people really have turned on a country radio station to hear a Taylor song and kept that country radio station on to listen to other artists. It’s just a reality.

  8. Sarah says:

    Kirsten-
How exactly am I clueless about music? Im glad you think your music theory class taught you so much, but for the record you dont know my background, I happen to be very educated in music and the “biz.” I dont disagree with you that country music has many different areas to it. Keith, Kenny, Carrie, Taylor and many of the other current popular country acts do have a pop or even rock sound to them, I dont disagree with that. I also didnt say there was anything wrong with being pop or country pop or whatever you want to call it, I was simply saying that to say Taylor is country because her songs tell a story means nothing because all genres of music tell a story, something Im surprised you didnt learn in your class. I thought the point of this article was that Taylor is country because of what she said on CNN, and Im saying because you write songs that tell stories doesnt make you strictly a country singer. I also dont know why Taylor would be so worried about crossing over, did Faith get crap and loose fans in the late 90s yes she did, but not many people care anymore….in reality she opened a lot of doors for people like Carrie and Taylor and RF and Keith to be able to crossover. So Im pretty sure you and I agree on the fact that Taylor and a lot of other artists are crossover artists and that there is nothing wrong with that. Country Girl I re-read your last sentence and I orginally read it wrong, I thought you said “and she just may be giving one of the artists you love new fans along with success.” I missed the word her. I dont doubt some people have found country because of Taylor, but I think the majority of her young fans listen only to her, and pop stations. I hear her more on pop stations than country where I live. I have also heard from my local radio stations she does not track well lately in the surveys they send out to listeners.

  9. Katie says:

Except when she remixes every last drop of country out of the song and releases that to pop radio they don’t have to change the station. They can get it on top 40 and they don’t even have to listen to country as the songs no longer sound country at all. If she’s intent on staying country she’d release the album versions to pop radio. They might not hit #1 but at least she’d represent the genre better. The version of You Beling With Me that hit #1 on top 40 is a pop song. Not country.

  10. belle says:

I love you girls for writing this and you’re completely correct. The fact of the matter is Taylor won ETOY at the CMA’s and AOTY at the AMA’s. CMA’s are industry chosen and AMA’s are fan voted, so both the industry AND the fans feel she’s deserving. Anyone that has issues with her music, genre or anything else are more than welcome to their Opinion, but they’re outnumbered and there’s a difference between wanting your favorite artist to win an award, and bashing the artist that Did win it. I don’t know how/why certain people are so disrespectful at times or how they were raised but in this world, if you don’t have manners you won’t get too far in life. :-)

  11. ali says:

Kirsten – I don’t know you and I agree with what you said for the most part but I just thought I’d be friendly and point out that the way you attempted to stress your points came across a little pompus, and people might not be willing to read past that to see the actual good point you made. (i.e. “I know what I’m talking about because I’m Educated and took a class..”) You might not have realized how abrasive and frankly, conceited that sounds. I think your point speaks for itself and didn’t need that addition.

  12. Sarah says:

Belle- Awards shows are political and nothing more. Her fans are for the most part young girls who have nothing better to do than sit on the computer and/or text to vote for her. Again she’s not my cup of tea, I dont think she’s as talented as some people think. Im not saying she’s not talented just that she’s not that amazing to me. I’ve heard better singers in some of my local bars, I’ve also heard better song writting. Is that my opinion yes it is. I dont think anyone here is bashing her or saying anything bad about her. As far as manners go that’s a whole different ball game.

  13. Alacia says:

All i have to say is she will be around for a long time and i do like her her concerts are amazing, so she derserved entertainer of the year and she is a good role model for girls. but her music is more pop and she cannot sing live to save her life. so female vocalist of the year should not have gone to her but what ca you do.

  14. belle says:

Sarah – you of course have a right to your opinion, personally I love Taylor and everything she represents and the classy ways in which she expresses herself, but no matter who you are or what you do you’re not going to please everyone and there are people who just aren’t into her music etc. And that’s okay. However ever since she won ETOY I can’t believe how ridiculously rude some people have been about expressing their opinions about her. I was speaking in general and not in specific reference to the comments on this post when mentioning rudeness. Saying she’s not your ‘cup of tea’ is fine. That’s an opinoin and I see no offensive expression in that whatsoever. But I don’t think anyone has any business making the judgement call of whether anyone deserves an award or not. There are awards at the CMA’s and AMA’s that I didn’t love the outcomes for, and while I might’ve said, “Aw man I wanted so-and-so to win,” I would never bash the winner just because they’re not who I was rooting for.
I stand by what I said before ; the industry decided Taylor was worthy of the CMA’s and the fans voted for Taylor’s AMA wins. So whether certain people like her or not the reality is she’s very successful at what she does, both with the industry and with the fans and that’s a fact people can ‘hate’ until they’re blue in the face but it won’t change anything. They need to accept it and find more constructive uses of their time than bashing Taylor Swift.

  15. Matt says:

Taylor Swift is talented. Taylor has brought many “listeners” to country music. But has she driven some people away from country music?

  16. Dave says:

All the bashing of Taylor, a truly sweet, unbelievably talented young girl is truly disgusting. I would love to see how these haters conduct themselves in real life.

  17. Dave says:

I personally have never given country music a second look until Taylor came along.
