Taylor Swift is Going to Court and Suing a Sports Bar

Taylor Swift Lucky 13

Taylor Swift is suing the owners of a bar in Idaho for allegedly playing her songs without permission.

Taylor has teamed up with Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), the organization which collects license fees on behalf of songwriters and distributes them as royalties, to file a copyright infringement lawsuit against The Sports Cellar venue.

The legal action comes after BMI representatives allegedly discovered that Taylors hits were being used to entertain revelers even though the bar’s owners had failed to obtain a proper music license.

According to TMZ.com, Taylor and BMI bosses are seeking unspecified damages.

My question is…how in the world did Taylor find out that a little sports bar in Idaho was playing her music without a music license????

Well..tha’t is the limit!!! I guess Taylor does not have enough money so he has to go after a small sports bar in Idaho for not getting a license to play her songs….Good Grief!!

  2. Nicole says:

The TMZ article said: “According to a lawyer connected to the case, BMI deployed an “agent” to go on a recon mission at The Sports Cellar bar sometime last year, and the agent noticed the bar was playing music — including Taylor’s stuff — that they hadn’t paid for the right to play.”

So it sounds like BMI started this, and Taylor’s name is thrown in for media exposure…

I was actually thinking this morning about how classes at the gym use copyrighted songs and if they’re in violation of any laws for doing so. Thoughts?

  4. Jill says:

Hard to believe any Self-Respecting bar in Idaho would play her music!

  5. Ligoon says:

    LOL Jill….Very good point!!

  6. Stella says:

the fair act in music states that if the restaurant or business is less than 3,750 sq ft and doesn’t have more than 6 loudspeakers then it is exempt from paying a blanket license to PRO’s such as ASCAP, BMI, & SESAC. Therefore it’s not that small of a sports bar, and Adriana, your gym is probably okay :)

  7. Sami says:

You have to have a music license to play music? EVERYONES music is EVERYWHERE! I don’t see why it’s a problem for bar to play her music. It’s just like someone playing it in there own home on the cd player or a radio station comin off a radio. This is PATHETIC! Anyway I don’t get people that even like her, but that’s just my opinion.

  8. Sarah says:

Taylor should tell the people at BMI to drop it. I mean really do you need money that bad you’re gonna go after a bar? You should just be happy they are playing your music.

  9. JAy D says:

Are you serious??? Is it really a problem that they are playing her music? She has made more than enough money this year on acareer that has went through every loop hole possible. Winning this case will make her look nothing more than a selfish drama queen and hurt her image. Looks like we have another Miley Cyrus. Next thing you know..Taylor Swift will be gone and someone else will stepup.

    Bad move on here part.

  10. Jeremy says:

Im sure it was being played in the bathroom…….it’s great to here her sing like crap when im taking one!!!!!

  11. Alacia says:

i love all these comments and i so agree with all of you guys.

  12. K says:

Wow, this is surprising, yet sad. All artists make noise about how they’re “not in it for the money” and then they turn around and do something like this. Taylor has more than enough money to last a lifetime; it confuses me why she doesn’t do more good with what she has. Taylor may not be directly responsible for this, but it definatly made be lose some respect for her.

  13. JESSIE says:

C’mon this is ridiculous. If we take this seriously, Motley Crue is gonna have to start suing every strip club EVER for playing “Girls, GIrls, Girls”! Good grief. What a greedy little girl!

  14. Grams says:

I personally don’t like her music but if a small bar in Idaho is playing it, she should be thankful. With the money she’s making she can’t possibly be losing that much. She’s a conceited little brat. She expects to win all the awards…her reaction proves it.
