The Boot has a great article on the story behind Keith Urban’s “Sweet Thing.” Apparently, Keith and Monty Powell didn’t think they had much of a hit on their hands…at the beginning anyway. Monty tells the story…
We spent the morning working on a song that frankly really wasn’t great. We really tried hard to have a break through on it, and it wasn’t happening. We were both kinda tired and grumpy and we were hungry so we just said, ‘Let’s go get some lunch.’
Well, Keith drove them around in his vintage mustang…upon coming back to the house; Keith started playing “this rift on the guitar that is now the ‘Sweet Thing’ rift at the top.” Monty started singing about Nicole and Keith’s “first date” and the rest is history.
