ACM’s Newest Entertainer of the Year – Carrie Underwood
Posted by Country Girl on April 5th, 2009
Tell us your thoughts on Carrie Underwood winning Entertainer of the Year 2009.
I love that a woman knocked Kenny Chesney off his pedestal but I must say that from what I have heard and seen Carrie is not an actual entertainer. She has one of the most amazing voices that I have heard but her stage presence isn’t that great – yet. She admits that it needs work.
I agree. She can sing, obviously, she won a singing contest. But a lot more goes into performances than just a voice. I wasn’t impressed when I saw her in concert. I’m interesting in next years EOTY….
she is a great singer. entertainer – no. i work in radio, have met her and girl has ZERO personality. her show is boring. im glad a girl won, but any one but her.
I am with everyone else…she did not deserve to win. She has not paid her dues in the industry yet. Kenny Chesney is constantly selling out venues in a matter of minutes and always has one of the top tours…Brad and Keith have come SO far in their careers…they are 2 of the most talented guitarists out there. All 3 of them are the definition of an entertainer.I am glad Kenny didn’t win, but I would have rather him than Carrie…I don’t think she should have even been nominated
I think the worst thing that could have been done by the industry is having the fans vote on the awards. The ACM awards are supposed to be prestigious and you being honored by your peers in the industry…they aren’t supposed to be “Let’s see who’s fans can get to the most computers.” That’s what the CMT Awards are for…not the ACMs.
Carrie shouldn’t have ever been nominated…that’s problem 1….EOTY is the icing on the cake…what’s left? Now she’s gonna think she’s got what it takes…no need to improve…and she soooo does…her shows are lacking in personality, ease, crowd involvement….she’s a great singer…but needs work on her entertaining….She’s not quite in the same league as the others.
Why does someone have to “pay their dues?” Is that a written rule somewhere?! If so I must have missed it. I think it is completely rude to say she didnt “deserve” it, exactly what reasons do you have that allow you to say she doesnt “deserve” it? The academy wouldnt have nominated her if she was not deserving, sounds to me like most of you should be pissed at the Academy not Carrie. Also has everyone else that won EOTY stopped growing and improving?! Hell no, winning that award doesnt mean you pack it up, winning that award means you had a great year!
For the record Carrie had the best year out of the 5 nominees which Im sure got her the Academy vote, and her fans, well they are great at voting for her. Check out what it takes to get nominated, it’s not about how good the show is, it’s about how good the year is.
I have been to many concerts and I am sorry, Carrie is not an entertainer. I recently went to Brad Paisley and I cannot believe all that he puts into a show and how “entertaining” he is. I don’t think the ACM should have allowed it to be fan voted.
Mel – saying that Carrie didn’t deserve it was almost as rude as “knocking Kenny Chesney off his pedestal.” I don’t agree with the Academy letting it be fan voted – but that’s not Carrie’s fault. And this site doesn’t know Kenny very well if they’re saying he’s on a “pedestal” – that couldn’t be further from the truth. Very ignorant post all around.
Hey Mel – I didn’t say that we were upset with Carrie. We are upset with the ACM panel. We don’t think she should have even been nominated. PLUS, we think that it’s unfair for fans to vote on Entertainer of the Year when most fans have only seen one or two of the acts that are nominated live. I have NOTHING against Carrie Underwood as a vocalist. I think she is AMAZING. Certainly one of the best voices in country music. NO ONE can deny that. When you think of Entertainer of the Year I think that it should be based on an all around career of an artist. Album sales, tour sales, stage presence, vocals, etc, etc. The list could go on and on. Sorry we disagree on this subject…….just didn’t think it was time for her to win this award.
Well I am personally glad she won. I saw her in concert with Keith last year and thought she was amazing! You really need to see her sing in person to realize how talented she is. Am I surprised that she won so soon, sure I’ll give you that. I personally was routing for Brad. But the girl worked her rear end off last year and had more tour dates than Brad, Keith, and George.
And I hope you are all going to say the same about “not paying her dues” to Miranda as well, she came from a talent show too. I don’t think it matters how you make it there, and any singer that says they would rather spend years singing in bars then making it on American Idol or on Nashville Star is lying.
Country girl, based on your criteria then Carrie definitely should have won. Her album sales were higher than all the guys last year, her ticket sales were second next to Kenny, and it’s an understatement to say that she is the most talented vocalist out of the group.
I could see all the uproar if this was solely based on fan voting, but it’s not. It’s based on fan voting and the academies vote, we don’t even know what the percentages are. I’m sorry I just don’t get all the hate. I think by far she had the best year of all the people nominated, the girl was everywhere.
And I just think she is a doll and an absolute sweetheart. After her concert with Keith, I waited in line with my 10 year old cousin (who is crazy about her) to get her autograph and she was so nice and personable. It’s good to see good things happen to good people.
Coutry Girl-
If you stand behind everything you said than you and I dont disagree. I do think people should take their disappointment, anger, frustration and so on to the ACM’s, but no out on Carrie. The general consensus seems to be she didnt deserve it and to those people I say, you may have that opinion however it is not up to you to decide that part of the process. That part is left to the ACM’s and they clearly thought she did. So as far as deserving the nomination goes well that part was up to the ACM’s, the rest was up to the fans, and the voting process, well cheating, lying, and buying votes were all the rage this year. That said Im not 100% convinced the fans votes counted towards the actual total!!!
Was it the “time” for her to win well that we do disagree on because I believe she did everything they’ve asked of someone to win that category, her album, singles, videos, tv apperances, contribution to country music, and charitable deeds were beyond those of Kenny, Keith, Brad, and George in the year that counted.
I don’t know much about the actual criteria for winning EOTY…but I guess I’ve always felt that the people who are nominated are the most ENTERTAINING….They are involved in nearly all aspects of their job…writing, singing, performing, playing, and they have a GREAT show….They sell out tours, they sell albums….I was SHOCKED to hear she was even nominated….sure, she’s sold albums….she’s had a ONE successful tour (not arena), and she’s won awards, but she’s yet to really learn to entertain. She’s said it herself that she needs to learn. For the first time, I feel like I have a pretty good concept of this catagory. I’ve seen all the nominees in concert. This shouldn’t be a fan-voted award…people pull for their favorites, regardless if they have any knowledge at all of the other nominees. Carrie- I’ve seen her perform live in Lexington, KY…she sounds amazing, but has ZERO crowd connection. It’s obvious that she says the same things night after night, and she doesn’t know how to “speak” to the crowd. The most entertaining thing is her wardrobe changes…She sings every song exactly like the CD and I want her to work it…change it…feed off the crowd….George-well, he’s just kinda done….sure…I know he’s still popping out hits, but entertainer of the year? I think not. He doesn’t write his own songs, he barely performs…. Brad- I just saw Brad….his show is impressive, his guitar skills are stellar, but he sees the crowd as just that…a crowd….He doesn’t really feed off of them, doesn’t really connect. He’s an amazing song writer and musician, but I probably won’t go see him again, cuz I was just a face in the crowd eventhough I was front row. Kenny-although he was amazing back in the day…I think playing stadiums is selfish….it’s a cop-out….a fan doesn’t get the experience they deserve when they are one in 50,000….he’s become too much about the “show” and not enough about the music. The last time I saw him, I left a fan of his opening act….Keith-that would be the opening act I left a fan of…He is involved in EVERY aspect of his music…writes, plays, performs….His concerts are ranked up there with the best….He really feeds off the crowd, and he makes each show different because there are different people watchign him…He interacts with the crowd and fans….He plays non-stop for nearly 2-3 hours at a time. He doesn’t release singles every month just to stay on top…He prides himself in excellent music, and playing live is what it’s all about for him….
Do I hate Carrie for winning? No…I don’t hate her…I think she needs to get a personality…but she can sing…But the Academy shoudln’t have nominated her in the first place…she’s not an entertainer…This makes it seem like she’s got it all…she’s all set…nothing to improve on…Um, yes there is…I’ve seen all the nominees live and she can’t even hold a candle to Brad, Keith, or even Kenny….
I am glad that someone knocked Kenny off his EOTY Throne, but it should have not been Carrie. If you are going to have awards that fans can vote on, then it needs to be all the awards, not the biggest one of the night. That’s why there are the CMT Music awards.
Carrie is far from being an Entertainer of the Year contender. I have seen all the nominees in concert and well she puts on a great show, there really isn’t all that much to her show. I would not pay to see her in concert. I work at an arena and was scheduled to work her show. Same with Brad Paisley. I am not a big fan his, but he does put on a great show and has great songs(not a fan of some of his songs, but only Brad could make them as good as they are). Keith Urban is unbelievable when he hits the stage. He puts all he has into his show each and every night. George, well he is George. Kenny i’ve never been a fan of, and saw him only once when Rascal Flatts opened for him and I wasn’t impressed. I do not like the fact that he plays stadium only shows. He talks about wanting the music to stand alone and that doesn’t happen when he has to have a huge production set up for the stadium shows. His fans aren’t able to really feel apart of the show if they can’t afford the good seats. Why would you want to waste your money for a show if you are going to be in the nose bleed.
To me being an Entertainer of The Year is just that—entertaining all year long. Sure artists need to have time off between tours to recharge, promote a new album, create a new album, etc. But you need to be out there on stage most of the year. Record sales are important also, as well as television appearance and all that jazz; but w/o putting your music out live in a show for the fans, you wouldn’t have a job. Kenny only tours in the summer. Brad, Keith, Rascal Flatts(i know they were not nominated), and others tour year round. It’s called Entertainer of the Year, not of the season.
What irritated me most about the whole thing is when Reba outright said women put on a better show. I have a lot of respect for her and what she has meant to country music, especially the women, but I couldn’t disagree more about that statement. The current crop are not ENTERTAINERS. Good vocalists, sure. Good songwriters, we got ‘em.But overall entertainers? No. This turned into a men vs. women contest. I wasn’t about the entertainment the artists presented. The first and foremost reason I heard columnists and critics (NOT fans) give as to why Carrie should win this year is because the last time a WOMAN won was in 2000 when the Chicks got it. I never once saw an article that did a compare and contrast of all the shows of the noms and come to the conclusion that Carries was the best. (If you know of one, let me know, I’d love to see it. Mindy thanks for your remarks.) Saw some that listed her tour numbers this year, but few that put them up against Kenny’s, Brad’s or Keith’s. Reason most likely being that they don’t hold up next to theirs. It was all about a woman should win it because one hasn’t in a while. That’s embarrassing as hell! The powers that be said a woman should win, so the chose Carrie to be the most entertaining woman of the year. Total politics! and no I am not blaming Carrie herself either. The whole thing sucks.
But here’s a couple bones I do have to pick with Carrie (and/or her “people”)
1. that red dress she wore to preform ITYS in. First, it was “like a matter of national security” before the show. That’s going a bit far don’t you think? And then when we did see it, she couldn’t move, breathe deeply or walk in it. Want to know why women don’t put on as greater a show? because of things like that. It was extremely overdone to being with and she stood on stage with a glittery microphone like she was competing in the Miss America pageant. Not entertainment. Only Madonna can “strike a pose” and still entertain people at the same time. It also came off as a bit full of it because there’s no way she didn’t know she was the big star of the night. guess she didn’t want anyone to forget it.
2. Maybe I’m the only one, but I didn’t appreciate it when she also accepted the award on behalf of all the women before her that worked hard and didn’t get an award like she did. That was a little bold I thought. Then she said she had no idea why women weren’t nominated more in this male-dominate genre. The award also isn’t meant to be for the girls, and I feel like she and the media turned it into that kind of statement. Its meant to be for country music and its integrity, and I think it got twisted big time. Again, not blaming just her- the media didn’t help either- but she didn’t seen to see any bigger picture than “winning one for the girls.”
ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR
This award is presented to the individual, duo or group who showed the most overall success in the country music industry during the preceding calendar year. The factors to be considered in arriving at this award include, but are not limited to, success at radio, sales of prerecorded music, success of music videos, live concert ticket sales, artistic merit, appearances on television, appearances in films, songwriting, writing and contributions to the country music industry. The nominees shall be determined by a nomination ballot(s) and are subject to the approval of the board. The winner shall be determined by a combination of votes from the membership of the ACM and viewer voting.
Looking at that description of the criteria for the past single year (not a career) Carrie won hands down. She beat each and everyone of those men based on her numbers and appearances. List them all by person and you will see her list will be by far the longest. For this specific past year she won. And its not a specific concert you attended, and in your opinion she wasnt entertaining which is what most of the comments are saying. She worked about 360 days last year.
She deserved it – her concerts were awesome, her voice is fabulous, she worked harder than all of the others put together. Sorry, all the arguments above didn’t alter my mind – she’s still my choice! Congrats Carrie!
Any women but her.
I’m sorry if this offends anyone but i don’t like her. She never paid her dues she won a singing contest. I’m sorry but any women but her.

Allie – the “pedestal” comment wasn’t meant to be rude or inconsiderate. The man has won five times in a row! Of coarse he was on a pedestal.
CMTT – can you post what the exact criteria is for ETOY for the ACM’s? That will help me in my response. Thanks!!
anonymous: let me see what I can dig up on the criteria for the awards and I will post. The ACM website is down right now but I will keep checking.

looks like Carrie was more than qualified to be Entertainer of the year.
Good on her.Congrats Carrie
